ZuZ Unisex Hair & Beauty Centre

ZuZ Hair and Beauty Centre, formerly known as The Attik, which was located in Leonards Road, Ivybridge, is now in much larger premises in Lee Mill, just to the west of Ivybridge.

Sue Murphy, from Plympton, founded the business three years ago and, before that, ran a similar business in Saudi Arabia. Sue has trained in London and has also undertaken advanced training with nationally-known TV celebrity hairdresser Andrew Collinge. Sue is helped at ZuZ by Lyn, who has undertaken advanced training with Steiner. Lyn also worked at The Attik for two years and prior to that, ran her own salon in Norwich.

Sue Murphy and the team

The staff at ZuZ are highly skilled in cutting and colouring, but our main specialty is in the Yuko hair straightening method. This treatment lasts between six and eight months, and sometimes for up to a year. The salon has a large number of clients with curly hair who come to them to have the Yuko System treatment.

During her time in Saudi Arabia, Sue noticed that a lot of clients were travelling to London to undergo the Yuko treatment at Harrods. She decided to go to London to undertake the course which enabled her to perform the treatment herself. The Yuko system is a unique hair straightening system from Japan which operates in a way that won't damage hair.

Other hair straightening methods often lead to hair damage. With the innovative Yuko System, hair is not only straightened, but damaged hair is turned in to healthy hair which is restored and left with a glossy and shiny look.

Hair can be damaged when there is a loss of protein from within the hair shaft. The Yuko hair care system claims to restore those nutrients to the hair by using a specially designed iron which is heated to 180 degrees. This method ensures the heat-sealing of collagen, keratin, silk protein and other proteins that are naturally present in the hair. The process is finished off with Phiten treatments, leaving the hair noticeably healthier and shinier.

Sue often jokingly comments to her customers that their hair will be worth a lot of money after they have had the treatment, because the Yuko System uses gold particles. The Japanese believe that gold is good for the body. It's also one of the qualities that gives your hair its shiny look.

Sue is proud of the fact that ZuZ uses natural and environmentally-friendly products that are not tested on animals. One of these products is the Los Angeles-made Joico which is used by well-known stars. The other is the Susan Molyneux range, which is made from plant extracts. In ZuZ's larger salon, Sue intends to add further services such as reflexology and various holistic therapies.

ZuZ has plenty of free parking near the premises and the salon offers customer toilets and good access for the disabled.
